School Readiness in North Carolina: One State's Attempt to Do the Right Thing

Maxwell, K. L., Bryant, D. M., Ridley, S. M., & Scott-Little, C.
2001

Synopsis: The authors report on the process undertaken by a North Carolina task force to develop a school readiness definition and assessment plan for the state. This task force emphasized that school readiness should be defined not just as children's readiness for school but also as the capacity of the schools to educate all eligible children. The article describes the assessment tools used and reports a sample of findings from the statewide assessment. A brief discussion of implications for other states concludes the piece.
