Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have a high risk for sexual violence and are often at increased risk of sexual and physical assault. This project will improve the forensic exam experience for sexual violence victims with IDD by developing, implementing, and evaluating an in-person and online training for communication adaptations to the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) standard protocol for use with victims with IDD. This project builds upon preliminary recommendations from a 2010 Governor's Crime Commission project conducted by the NC Office on Disability and Health and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center and supports implementation of the Fundamental Element of Accessibility to improve access to services for people with disabilities. This project will convene a panel of Sexual Violence Professionals and a panel of Disability Partners to ensure the training resources are relevant and developmentally appropriate and are sustainable beyond the grant cycle.
