Congressional Briefing Features FPG's Allison Metz on Introducing Wide-Scale Implementation Strategies to Government Agencies

November 18, 2014

The National Prevention Science Coalition to Improve Lives (NPSC) has announced an open-invitation for officials and staff at all levels of government—as well as for researchers, evaluators, educators, practitioners, advocates, and funders—to a Congressional Briefing. “Practical Lessons on Moving Successfully from Prevention Science to Policy” will take place on December 3rd, 1:00-3:30 PM, at the Rayburn House Office Building (2237) in Washington, D.C.

The NPSC’s briefing will feature nationally recognized experts. Representatives John Conyers (D-MI-13) and Todd Young (R-IN-9) will make opening remarks, and FPG’s Allison Metz (right) will be part of a panel on how to embed prevention science work into legislation and government agency operations.

In addition to Metz, co-director of FPG’s National Implementation Research Network, the panel will include Jon Baron (Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy), who will discuss increasing the effectiveness of government spending; Dennis Embry (PAXIS Institute), who will speak about entrepreneurial approaches to sustainable implementation; and Kathryn Oliver (University College London), who will explain what studies say about getting research into policy.

The briefing’s other panel looks at “Lessons Learned from Legislators and Agency Administrators in Collaborating with Prevention Scientists to Utilize their Work.” JooYeun Chang  (associate commissioner, Children’s Bureau) and Bobby Vassar (former Chief Counsel, U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime) will discuss working with implementation science and prevention science researchers, practitioners, and advocates. NPSC director Diana Fishbein will moderate the briefing.

In 2013 and earlier this year, the NPSC conducted three prevention-related briefings: interventions across policy areas, scaling-up implementation, and juvenile justice reform.
