February 14, 2022

The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) recently announced the creation of the James J. Gallagher Memorial Fund, which is designed to address the need for complex, interdisciplinary discussions concerning gifted education. Gallagher, a renowned child development expert, served as Director of the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) for more than 25 years, and as Senior Scientist Emeritus at FPG until his death in 2014.

According to the NAGC press release, Gallagher’s children created the fund by donating their inherited portion of the royalties from Gallagher's textbook Educating Exceptional Children, which was co-authored by Gallagher’s colleague Mary Ruth Coleman.

In the release, NAGC President Lauri Kirsch thanked the Gallagher family, saying, “The Association is incredibly grateful to the Gallagher family and applauds their generosity and dedication to advancing the needs of our gifted children. James Gallagher’s contributions to the fields of special education and gifted education are so vast that they’re impossible to measure. This fund will help to ensure that the issues and policies that Dr. Gallagher dedicated his career to, such as ensuring access to gifted programs for Black and Brown children and other underrepresented populations, continue to be examined, discussed, and acted on."
