This project will conduct a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in five Educare schools. The Educare model of early childhood education is high-quality, center-based care and education for children from birth to age 5 in high-risk communities. The core features of the program include well-educated and supported teachers; a focus on children's social-emotional development as well as language, literacy, and cognition; extensive family involvement opportunities and support; and a reliance on evidence-based practices. In a previous project to launch the RCT of Educare, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute and local researchers at the five Educare schools developed study recruitment materials, obtained IRB approval for the study, consented 170 children and their families into the study, conducted initial parent interviews and child language assessments, and randomly assigned recruited families to Educare treatment and community care control groups. The current project will include longitudinal follow-up of these 170 infants and their families plus an additional cohort of 75 through kindergarten. Measures will include annual child developmental assessments, videotaped parent-child interaction observations, and parent interviews and surveys. The specific aim of the project is to examine the effectiveness of a model early intervention program for children from low-income families.
