Current Institute of Education Sciences (IES) funding for the UNC team totals $1,717,945 over 6 years, from 2021-2027.
Since 2005, Targeted Reading Instruction (TRI) has worked with teachers and students in rural counties across North Carolina and the US to strengthen classroom reading instruction. TRI’s 15-minute daily reading intervention is designed to rapidly accelerate reading progress and build capacity for teaching reading. Its unique virtual coaching model provides teachers with on-going in-the-moment support as they work with individual students. TRI’s work helps students learn how to read and teachers grow new skills for reading instruction.
Federal funding for TRI supports in-person professional development sessions, ongoing virtual coaching, and materials, including books, letter tiles, and magnetic boards.

TRI studies indicate “spillover effects,” indicating that even students who did not receive direct TRI coaching benefitted from being taught by a teacher participating in TRI professional development (Amendum et al., 2011).
Teachers continue to use TRI activities in strategies beyond their engagement in the study, creating a lasting impact. When considering that the average years of experience in NC for teachers is 13 years, and class sizes are 16 students, then the 135 teachers who took part in the study could potentially impact reading for more than 28,000 students throughout North Carolina.
