As one of the world’s premier educational opportunities for anyone involved in the care and education of young children with disabilities (birth to age 8) in inclusive settings, FPG's International Early Childhood Inclusion Institute draws people from across the nation and around the world each year to Chapel Hill to:

  • strengthen and/or develop collaborative relationships and cross-agency systems that support early childhood inclusion of young children with disabilities;
  • discover evidence-based practices, resources, and tools for promoting opportunities for including children with disabilities; and
  • meet, learn from, and problem-solve with peers.

Earlier this year, the Inclusion Institute celebrated a quarter-century of FPG’s longstanding work in early childhood inclusion. Presentations and discussions at the event recognized the voices and experiences of children with disabilities and their families and highlighted the critical contributions of individuals with disabilities, families, practitioners, policymakers, and many other leaders in the field who have worked tirelessly to create more inclusive environments. And although it feels as though this year’s event just happened, we are already planning for next year.

FPG Senior Technical Assistance Specialist Chih-Ing Lim, PhD, will once again be chairing the conference but this year she will have a new partner in planning. FPG Senior Technical Assistance Specialist Sherri Britt Williams, MPH, will join Lim as co-chair. Below, Lim and Britt Williams share their thoughts on the anniversary and look ahead to next year’s event.

“Our 25th anniversary celebration was a big success,” said Lim. “We had 671 participants and presenters join us in person and virtually to reflect on our inclusion journey and set a clear path for where we need to go as a community. Throughout the Inclusion Institute, I was reminded of how many families, individuals with disabilities, and other change-makers have come before us to provide us with a clear vision of where we need to go.”

“While the path meanders in ways that are fraught with challenges,” Lim continued, “we have heard from many participants how they feel empowered and energized to move forward, knowing that wherever they are on their journey, this conference is their village and a place where they can learn and grow together. We are humbled to continue to grow and enhance this village with our advisory board members and with all the constructive insight and feedback provided to us. Most of all, we hope that you all will continue to consider us to be part of your inclusion journey in the upcoming year.”

“For many years, the Inclusion Institute has been where I’ve found inspiration and partnership in the work of inclusion,” says Williams. “I’ve enjoyed presenting and learning alongside so many changemakers who share a deep commitment to ensuring every child and family is meaningfully included.”

“Co-chairing with Dr. Chih-Ing Lim is a true honor,” continued Williams, “and I’m excited to help shape a 2026 experience that connects research, implementation, real-world experiences, and practical strategies. I’m thrilled to continue the Institute’s spirit of connection, reflection, and collective action.”

“And, as Chih-Ing so beautifully described,” said Williams, “the Inclusion Institute has truly become a village for so many of us. It's a place where ideas and partnerships take root through shared wisdom and learning.”
