Nissa Towe-Goodman, PhD, is a research scientist at the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG). Data is at the heart of research. To help bring research to life, the Data Management and Analysis Core at FPG works with researchers and investigators—at FPG and elsewhere at UNC—providing support across the full course of projects. For more than 30 years, it has served as a data coordinating center, data management hub, and methodologic support for projects.

Growing up in Chandler, Arizona, Iris Kang BA ’23 saw firsthand the impact that socioeconomic status and family support have on students’ ability to learn at school. Her understanding that much of a child’s future is determined by their early years piqued her interest in child development. She is the 2023 recipient of FPG's Barbara Davis Goldman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research.

Recognizing the value of mentorship as a critical component to the success of its scientists, FPG offers a mentoring program for early career researchers. Program director Ron Seifer, PhD, who is also associate director for research at FPG, believes that research groups flourish by cultivating the next generation.

Children are not miniature adults. So states the article, “Science for policy to protect children in cyberspace,” published in the March 30, 2023 issue of Science. The piece resulted from a collaboration among Diana Fishbein, PhD, director of translational neuro-prevention research at the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) and three other scholars, Michal Gilad, Gideon Nave, and Nizan Geslevich Packin.

She is currently working on the Build Up project, which is part of The Impact Center at FPG. FPG Faculty Fellow Iheoma Iruka was lead author on Black Parents and Their Babies: The Dual Pandemic of Racism and COVID-19, 2019–2022, a report which found that while Black families and their babies have survived the last few years of the pandemic, they continue to experience the negative impact of racism, discrimination, economic strain, and other inequities, compounded by the global event.

An interdisciplinary team across multiple departments at UNC-Chapel Hill, led by FPG Faculty Fellow Brianne Tomaszewski, created Work Together NC in partnership with adults with ID/DD and their families, organizations, employers, agencies, allies, and self-advocates. This five-year project, which began in 2021, recently launched a new website.
