Biographical Statement

Doré R. LaForett, PhD, is an advanced research scientist at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research on young children's school readiness and mental health spans the promotion, prevention, and treatment continuum. As an early childhood researcher who does work in schools, homes, and the community, she conducts original research and program evaluation studies on normative development and education experiences of young children and families; contexts that influence children's academic and social emotional development; educational, social-behavioral, and family-focused interventions; and early care and education programs. Her work primarily focuses on low-income and ethnic/language minority populations, with a heavy emphasis on young dual language learners. Her research is informed by her clinical experience with children and families targeting externalizing and internalizing behaviors and developmental disabilities in school, community, and health care settings.

Dr. LaForett currently serves as a principal investigator on an IES-funded study examining associations between language of instruction and young children's academic outcomes in Spanish-English dual language educational settings. Other recently completed projects include serving as a Co-I on an IES-funded study evaluating an evidence-based program for early elementary students on self-regulation and educational outcomes and an evaluator on the National Center for Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning.

Dr. LaForett currently serves as secretary of the Society for Research in Child Development's Latinx Caucus (of which she was one of the founding members), and has been a panel reviewer for the Administration for Children and Families within the U.S. DHHS, the SRCD Biennial Meeting, and the ACF National Research Conference on Early Childhood. She served on the task force responsible for revising the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development, and is an appointed member of Governor Cooper's Early Childhood Advisory Council.

Dr. LaForett is a licensed psychologist in the state of North Carolina.
