Each year, International Women’s Day falls on March 8th, and the United States dedicates the entire month of March to Women’s History Month. This observance started in 1981, when Congress asked the President to declare one week in March as "Women's History Week." Congress continued this tradition for the next five years. In 1987, after advocacy from the National Women’s History Project, Congress officially made March “Women’s History Month.” Since 1995, presidents have annually proclaimed March as Women's History Month, celebrating women's contributions and achievements in various fields throughout American history.

With each new year, the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) selects and publishes a theme for Women’s History Month. This year, the theme is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” According to the NWHA, this theme honors women who are reimagining and rebuilding systems to ensure long-term sustainability for the environment, the economy, and within education and social justice.

In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating all of the inspiring, industrious, and innovative women of FPG, who are represented by their work, their publications, through news stories, and more across our website.
